Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that there are 30,000 to 60,000 people who are not in a condition to return to homes due to damage caused by the floods. He said he met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah pertaining to Assam floods.
“As of now, assessments are going on, there are 30,000 to 60,000 people who aren’t in condition to return to homes. He assured us of all possible help,” the chief minister said. Sarma added that this time, the state received comparatively more rainfall.
Incessant rainfall in Assam caused massive flooding in the state where lakhs of people were affected.
In a daily update, Assam State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMA) said that 620 villages in 14 districts were still affected by the floods.
Nearly 9 lakh people were still facing the impact of water and over 14,000 hectare crop area was under the water. In the past 24 hours, the state recorded three new deaths due to floods.
The time, floods have caused massive damage to roads, bridges, embankments and other infrastructure in Assam. The authorities are currently running 173 relief camps and distribution centres in 14 districts. While people in some areas are returning to their homes, about 75,000 people are still taking shelter in these relief camps. Districts of Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Hojai and Kamrup have seen major erosion due to heavy water flow.
When the flood started, over 40 lakh people and over 33 lakh animals were affected across 31 districts.
