Priyanka Gandhi backs Sanjay Raut, says action against him ‘inspired by the spirit of revenge’

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra  attacked the Centre over action against Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut. She said action against Raut was inspired by the spirit of revenge and malice. The Congress leader said that the BJP is adopting every trick to suppress the voices standing in opposition to its anti-democratic politics. “But, the stick of lies and repression will not last long in democracy,” she said in a tweet.

This comes a day after Raut appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged money laundering case. He was summoned by the central agency in the case when his party was facing a revolt by a majority of MLAs. He was first summoned on June 28, but his lawyer sought some more time for his appearance. The ED then issued fresh summons, asking him to appear before it on Friday, July 1.

After his questioning, the Sena leader said as a responsible citizen and MP, it was his duty to appear if an investigative agency summoned him. He, however, said that the problem was with timing. “But they (ED) had doubts. Their officials behaved well with me. I told them that I can come again if need be,” Raut said.
Raut is facing a probe linked to the re-development of a Mumbai ‘chawl’ and other financial transactions involving his wife, Varsha Raut, and other associates.
In April this year, the ED provisionally attached assets worth Rs 11.15 crore linked to Varsha Raut and others. Among the assets attached by the agency were land held by Pravin Raut, ex-director of Guru Ashish Construction Pvt Ltd, a Dadar flat of Varsha Raut, wife of Sanjay Raut and Alibaug plots jointly held by Varsha and Swapna Patkar, wife of Sujit Patkar.
The move was heavily criticised by Sena and other opposition parties. Then Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis had said that Raut should go to court and come clean of charges. Speaking to reporters then, he said: “When they (the MVA government) send officers to the residences of our leaders even when they are at no fault, we say we will go to court as we trust it. But when the ED takes action on the basis of evidence, they are bad-mouthed. I think he should come clean.”
