Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) announced it will support NDA’s candidate Droupadi Murmu for the upcoming Presidential elections, which will be held on July 18.
While speaking to media, SAD’s chief Sukhbir Singh Badal confirmed that his party would support NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu.
He also said that the Akalis will never go with Congress because of the “atrocities they have committed on the Sikh community”.
The announcement has come a day after BJP national president JP Nadda reached out to Sukhbir Singh Badal to seek support for NDA’s presidential nominee.
The decades old alliance between the BJP and Akali Dal broke down on the issue of the three farm laws which the Modi government later annulled. The estrangement had resulted in SAD leader and Badal’s wife Harsimrat Kaur resigning from the Union Cabinet.
Both parties contested the Punjab Assembly polls held earlier this year without much success.
Murmu and her challenger Yashwant Sinha were the only two candidates left in the fray for the July 18 presidential election after scrutiny of nomination papers.
Besides all NDA constituents, parties like YSR Congress, BJD and BSP have also extended support to Murmu.
