England’s World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan decided to hang his boots on Tuesday, calling time on an illustrious career after a torrid run of form that was showing no signs of recovery. Moeen Ali, who has played under Morgan as well as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni, was asked about the captaincy styles of the two. As for Moeen, there isn’t much difference.
Dhoni remains the most successful captain in India’s history, as far as ICC titles are concerned. In England’s cricketing history, Morgan remains the only captain to have helped the team win an ODI World Cup title.
“I have played under him (Morgan). I have played under MS Dhoni as well. There is not much difference between both of them in terms of the characteristics – very calm, very loyal to their players. Brilliant captain, brilliant player,” Moeen said in a chat with Sports Today.
When asked about Eoin Morgan’s greatest legacy, Moeen highlighted how the southpaw reformed the team’s approach in white-ball cricket.
“We were horrendous in white ball cricket before that. He changed the mindset of the players. Actually, the way England are playing now in Test cricket, I believe, is actually because of him. He showed that if you have the mindset, you can play fearless cricket, which we are playing now,” said the all-rounder.
During the chat, Moeen also spoke about Ravindra Jadeja who had a poor Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign with CSK. Jadeja was replaced by Dhoni as Chennai’s skipper in the middle of the season.
“He’s (Jadeja) inexperienced in terms of captaincy and leading CSK was tough for him this year because we weren’t playing well as a team. But he has got a good brain and he potentially could be a good leader in the future,” said Moeen.
Moeen himself has retired from Test cricket but is still an active England international in the two white-ball formats.
