A day after the posters of the alleged accused in the Ranchi violence was removed, Jharkhand minister Rameshwar Oraon said “posters violate rights of accused”.
“Displaying pictures of members of the crowd was wrong in my personal opinion. They may have been accused in eyes of the public but they’re not yet accused in eyes of law. We are yet to take them to court,” said Oraon.
“The government has formed committee of two officers which will enquire into details of the situation. Report is awaited,” the state Finance Minister added.
The Ranchi police on Tuesday put up the posters of alleged accused in the violence, across the city. The police removed the posters later, citing “some error”.
“There was some error in the posters. So they are removed but will be put up again after correction, said the police
Violent protests were witnessed in Ranchi on Friday over controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad by now-suspended BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal.
The clashes left two persons dead and more than 20, including policemen, injured, prompting the administration to clamp prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC on parts of the city and suspend Internet services.
Earlier today, the police put up hoardings of those involved in the violence with the photographs, their names and addresses at major intersections of the city.
The step was taken a day after Governor Ramesh Bais summoned senior officers of the state including DGP Neeraj Sinha and expressed strong displeasure over the incident.
The Governor had directed the DGP to identify the miscreants and put their photographs in public places so that common citizens can give information about them.
The hoardings and posters put up at major intersections of the city have pictures of more than three dozen miscreants along with their names and addresses. These include the names of Chhotu, Charka, Bichha, Shad, Tagla, Aamir from Hindpiri, Qurban Chowk resident Captain, and Sirajul of Lakdi Pul Gali etc.
The pictures of all these accused were captured in CCTV, video and drone cameras during stone-pelting and vandalism on the main road on Friday afternoon.
So far, 15 people have been arrested in connection with the clashes while 26 FIRs have been registered so far in this case.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened in the city with the deployment of a heavy police force in the sensitive areas.
