‘Samajhdar ko ishaara kafi hai’: BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari points to Bengal cop’s Muslim name for claiming zero casualties in Howrah violence

West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari  stoked a controversy when he repeatedly pointed to Bengal ADG & IGP (Law & Order) Jawed Shamim’s Muslim name after he claimed zero casualties in the recent violence.
After naming Shamim and another cop named Hasan, he said “people should understand” whats’s happening in the state.
When asked about Jawed Shamim’s statement on Howrah violence, Suvendu Adhikari said, “It’s a political statement. It’s not a statement that should’ve come from a senior police officer. His name is Jawed Shamim, samajhdaar ko ishaara kaafi hai.”
“I was stopped by Hasan and pushed by Shamim. You should understand what is happening. Bengal has slipped from our hands,” he added.
Earlier today, ADG & IGP (Law & Order) Jawed Shamim briefed media about the recent Howrah violence over controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammed by now-suspended BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal.
He said, “There was no loss of life and no injuries were reported. More than 200 accused arrested, 42 FIRs registered… situation is normal, internet is restored. Section 144 implemented in Nakashipara.”
“Nobody will be spared no matter who it is. We ensure maximum punishment & are fully prepared to control the situation. We are trying to ensure that peace returns and are very firm in dealing with the situation. Appeal to people to refrain from rumor-mongering,” he added.
Protests erupted in several parts of the Howrah district on Friday over controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad.
Agitators resorted to stone-pelting, setting police vehicles on fire and damaging public property during violent protests and clashes with the law enforcers in the district. Fresh violent protests were reported in Panchla on Saturday.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been clamped in several areas of Howrah including Uluberia, Panchla and Domjur till June 15 and internet services have been suspended in the entire district till June 13 to prevent the spread of misinformation.
