Wanted to experience the feel of Dhoni magic: CSK’s Devon Conway rues missing Thala’s finish against MI live

Devon Conway made a sensational comeback in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the second half of the tournament after missing a few games. Conway made his IPL debut in the tournament opener against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but was dismissed cheaply. However, the left-hander came back really well scoring three half-centuries in as many games and played a major role in CSK’s wins against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals.
Reflecting on the season and talking about his experience in the IPL, Conway rued missing skipper MS Dhoni’s classic finish against Mumbai Indians. CSK lost a flurry of wickets and even though they were chasing a score of 156, the equation came down to 42 needed off the last three overs. Dhoni and Dwaine Pretorius managed to get boundaries in the next couple of overs to bring it to 17 needed off the last 6.
Pretorius was dismissed by Jaydev Unadkat on the very first delivery and the new batter Dwayne Bravo took a single to give Dhoni the strike. Dhoni rolled back the years to hit 6, 4, 2, 4 in the remaining deliveries to help CSK get to a thrilling win as MI were subjected to their 7th loss of the season.
In a video shared by CSK, Conway said, “Dhoni is class, I really wished I was there in the dugout when he finished the game against Mumbai, to experience the feeling of Dhoni magic, I was cheering for every run during that match from South Africa, I won’t forget that day.”
Conway had gone to Johannesburg for his wedding with his long-time girlfriend Kim for a week and had missed the game live from the dugout. After returning to India, Conway was slotted straight in under Dhoni, who was given the captaincy back. Conway ended the season with 252 runs in 7 games striking at 145.66.
The South Africa-born New Zealand batter will return to action this week in the first Test against England at Lord’s.
