Following the successful conclusion of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday (May 29), the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has announced a cash reward worth Rs. 1.25 crore for groundsmen and curators at all six venues that hosted the 15th edition of the cash-rich league.
Shah stated that staff at four venues in Maharashtra- Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, DY Patil Stadium, and Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium will receive Rs. 25 lakhs each. Meanwhile, those running operations at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens and Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium will get Rs. 12.5 lakhs each.
“I’m pleased to announce a prize money of INR 1.25 crores for the men who gave us the best games in #TATAIPL 2022. The unsung heroes – our curators and groundsmen across 6 IPL venues this season,” wrote the BCCI secretary in a tweet.
“We’ve witnessed some high octane games and I would like thank each one of them for their hardwork. 25 lacs each for CCI, Wankhede, DY Patil and MCA, Pune. 12.5 lacs each for Eden and Narendra Modi Stadium,” he added.
All 70 matches of 2022 IPL’s league stage took place entirely in four venues across Maharashtra in order to mitigate any possible threat of COVID-19 and ensure no-air travel is required. This action was taken after last year’s events where a huge outbreak in the IPL bio-bubble amid India’s deadly second wave of the pandemic forced the tournament to be suspended mid-way and ultimately shifted to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Mumbai’s Wankhede and Brabourne Stadium hosted 21 and 16 matches each respectively. Meanwhile, 20 games were held at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium and 13 at Pune’s MCA ground. The first qualifier and eliminator took place at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens while the second qualifier and the big final took at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The four matches of the 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge were also held in Pune over the last week.
