In keeping with the promise made by the Aam Aadmi Party, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday ordered the Finance Department to pay Rs 50 lakh in compensation to the family of deceased PEPSU Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) driver Manjit Singh, who was a frontline Corona warrior.
On April 26, 2020, Manjit Singh suffered a heart attack while he was en route to Maharashtra to bring back stranded Sikh pilgrims from Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded amid a national lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. KK Sharma, the then chairman of the PRTC, had said that Manjit Singh suffered a heart attack near Indore.
A fleet of 32 buses, including Volvo Scanias and HVAC buses, had been dispatched to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in April 2020 in an effort to facilitate the return of pilgrims stranded after the state was locked down due to COVID-19.
An amount of Rs 10 lakh had been given to Manjit Singh’s family by the previous Congress government.
In response, the AAP Punjab wing had protested statewide, seeking Rs 50 lakh as compensation for the family of Manjit Singh.
