‘Go back…you are an agent of Mamata Banerjee’: P Chidambaram shown black robes by Congress Cell lawyers in Bengal

Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday faced stiff protest by lawyers of Congress Cell at Calcutta High Court in West Bengal where he was present in connection with a case. The lawyers shouted slogans against him, showed him black robes and called him a TMC sympathiser. They said Chidambaram was responsible for party’s poor performance in West Bengal.
In a two-minute video clip shared by ANI, a person in black robes can be heard saying that it’s because of people like Chidambaram, the party was not able to stand up in West Bengal. “The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has looted…and you are saving the TMC. It is leaders like you, we are suffering in West Bengal. It is because people like you, the party is suffering in Bengal. You are an agent of Mamata Banerjee,” he said
.While it was not clear why lawyers protested against Chidambaram, it appeared that the senior leader was in the High Court in a a case involving the TMC.
In the 2021 assembly polls, the Congress could not win a single seat in the state and its vote share to came down by 9 per cent from what it had got in 2016. In the previous elections held in 2016, the party had won 44 seats with over 12 per cent vote share.
Mamata Banerjee’s TMC swept the elections by winning over 215 seats with nearly 48 per cent vote share. The BJP came at the second position by winning 77 seats with 38 per cent vote share. The Congress was pushed to the fourth position with over 3 per cent vote share after the CPI-M, which got nearly 5 per cent vote share.
