Broke 3-4 TV remotes, threw a few water bottles: Ponting recalls watching DC vs RR thriller from hotel

Issues for Delhi Capitals (DC) didn’t seem to end till the last week as after the unavailability of their star players first due to injury, then late arrivals and then COVID-19, the head coach Ricky Ponting had to miss a game due to 5-day isolation, the whole team had to remain in their rooms as six members tested positive in the camp including all-rounder Mitchell Marsh. However, all that was past and the last year’s table-toppers will hope for a fresh start in the second half of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they need to win 5 out of their 7 remaining games to qualify for the playoffs.
Capitals suffered a dramatic loss in their last game against Rajasthan Royals when they needed 36 off the final over and Rovman Powell hit three sixes off the first 3 deliveries but a no-ball controversy halted the game as unhappy with the umpire’s decision to not refer to the third umpire, skipper Rishabh Pant tried calling back his players and then sent the assistant coach onto the field.
Watching all of this unfold from the hotel room wasn’t easy for Ponting as he mentioned that he broke at least 3-4 four remote controls, and water bottles were thrown around while he was texting them constantly about what to do and what not.
“It was frustrating. I think I broke three or four remote controls and a few bottles of water might have got thrown into the walls and things like that (laughs). When you’re on the sidelines, being a coach and you can’t control what’s happening out in the middle, that’s hard enough, but when you’re not actually at the ground, it can get a little more frustrating. I am sending text messages every over, do this do that, things like that.
Ponting was also happy to be back after serving a 5-day quarantine following one of his family members’ positive test. “I feel pretty relieved to be back outside again, actually after another five days locked in, and obviously missing the game. Things didn’t go well in the game, we had a drama at the end. But, it’s nice to be back outside again,” he added.
