In the ongoing second Test between India and Sri Lanka at M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, during the second day of play, three fans managed to enter the ground and, in fact, two of them were pictured taking a selfie with former Indian skipper Virat Kohli before being escorted by the security staff.
The incident took place in the sixth over of Sri Lanka’s second innings when number three batter Kusal Mendis was getting medical treatment after he was hit by Mohammed Shami’s delivery.
In an attempt to see their favourite cricketer up close and get a chance to click a picture with Virat, three fans entered the ground and started running towards the players and came close to Kohli, who was fielding at slips. And to everyone’s surprise, Virat obliged to click the picture.
After the end of the second day of play, the newly appointed India’s Test vice-captain, Jasprit Bumrah, reacted to the security breach and expressed concern over the continuous security breach during matches in India, saying that this has increasingly been an issue.
“That is something we don’t control. Obviously, the security concern is an issue. Suddenly, we realised that there were intruders, but thankfully the officials intervened. We don’t know what to say about that. The craze for the game is very high and the fans get emotional sometimes,” Bumrah said.
This wasn’t the only such incident that happened during this two-match Test series. In Mohali, also during the first Test, a similar incident took place when a fan managed to enter the ground before being caught by the officials.
In Bengaluru, Kohli’s fan following in the ongoing fixture has been one of the talking points. The crowd was chanting his name on several occasions. The fans also chanted AB de Villiers’ name. The former South African batter is an RCB legend and played 11 seasons for them. Kohli also obliged the fans and showed his red vest to the crowd.
As far as the match is concerned, India needs nine wickets to whitewash Sri Lanka in the two-match Test series. Chasing the target of 447 to win, Sri Lanka ended Day 2 at 28 for the loss of one wicket.
