Janata Dal Secular leader and former Prime Minister HD Devegowda cited internal problems as one of the key reasons why Congress failed to make a mark in recently-concluded Assembly elections.
He also said that he is not thinking about any pre-poll alliances with any party for the Karnataka Assembly elections.
Talking about the recent Assembly election results, HD Devegowda said, “The reasons that led to Congress’ failure in Punjab include farmers’ agitation and the internal problem of Congress party.”
“This has given the best opportunity to AAP and opposition parties… People of Punjab have not selected BJP,” he added.
Talking about the next Assembly elections in Karnataka, the JDS leader said, “I would like to tell you that we are not at all thinking about those alliances. We will sit in the opposition and we will try to build the party.”
The JDS had stitched an alliance with Congress in the last Karnataka Assembly elections and managed to form government in the state with JDS chief HD Kumaraswamy elected as the chief minister.
However, that government did not last long as it was toppled by the BJP.
Meanwhile, the Congress Working Committee will meet on today to discuss the outcome of the assembly elections, even as the opposition party reeling from the latest electoral debacle refuted reports that the Gandhi family members will resign from all organisational posts.
Sources said Congress president Sonia Gandhi will chair the meeting of the party’s top decision-making body at its headquarters here at 4 PM on Sunday.
The Congress lost Punjab to the AAP and could not wrest any of the four other states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur – from the BJP.
