Devendra Fadnavis, other BJP leaders detained by cops; released

Maharashtra Leader of Opposition (LoP) and former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was, on Wednesday, detained by police in Mumbai, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed. Fadnavis along with other BJP leaders, was released after a brief detention.

BJP spokesperson Suresh Nakhua took to Twitter and said that Devendra Fadnavis has been detained by police in Mumbai. “Leader of Opposition Shri @Dev_Fadnavis ji detained by police near Metro cinema in Mumbai,” he said in a tweet.
According to agency reports, Mumbai police detained Devendra Fadnavis and other leaders of BJP as they were carrying out a protest march demanding the resignation of state minister Nawab Malik. The development comes just hours after Fadnavis submitted a pen drive with video proof of an alleged conspiracy against BJP leaders, to the Assembly Speaker.

This is the latest in the dramatic developments that have been unfolding in Maharashtra, where the central probe agencies are investigating various cases against local leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi. Speaking in the Assembly on Tuesday, Fadnavis had alleged that the MVA government in Maharashtra was ‘conspiring’ against BJP leaders in the state.

Responding to Fadnavis’ claims, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said that the state government will probe the allegations leveled by Fadnavis if the video ‘proof’ in the pen drive is proven to be authentic. “If it is true that the recording (submitted by Fadnavis) is of 125 hours, then the use of a powerful agency cannot be ruled out…and such agencies are only under the Government of India,” Pawar said.
