Kapil Sharma recalls PM Modi using his name during 2014 elections: ‘Rahul Gandhi itni comedy karte hai ki…’

After making the audience laugh with his TV show for several years, actor-comedian Kapil Sharma made his digital debut with a stand-up special on streaming giant Netflix, titled Kapil Sharma: I’m Not Done Yet. It dropped online today. Although the show has received mixed reviews from critics, his fans are loving all the personal stories and real-life instances he has spoken about.

In the show, Kapil also took pot-shots at the country’s Prime Minister. From talking about his ‘drunk’ tweet to PM Narendra Modi to recalling his speech from 2014, Kapil has been in the news for his show.

In the latest comedy special, the star comedian spoke about how he realised his popularity after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician mentioned his name during the 2014 election. “Toh popularity ka andaza aap kaise lagate hai? Alag alag jagah aapka naam use hone lagta hai. Jab 2014 ke elections hone wale the, toh do pradhaan mantri level ke candidate ladne wale the. Unme se kisi ek ne mera naam liya. Mai unka naam nahi lunga qki woh abhi bhi pradhaan mantri hai. Unhone kisi rally me boldiya, ‘Jo Rahul Gandhi itni comedy karte hai ki Kapil Sharma ka show band hone wala hai,” he said in the show. (Translation: So how do you gauge popularity? Different worlds start using your name. When the 2014 elections were about to take place, two prime ministerial level candidates were to contest. One of them took my name. I will not take his name as he is still the Prime Minister. He’d said in some rally, ‘Rahul Gandhi does so much comedy that Kapil Sharma’s show is going to end.’)

Taking a hilarious dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, he joked, “Achcha, mujhe toh politics samajhti nahi hai itni toh maine utna clip uthake apne Facebook pe daal diya. Us din mujhe realise huwa ki Rahul Gandhi ke bhi followers kam nahi hai kyunki Hindi me toh gaaliya padi, Italian bhi badi padi. Maine bhi khaliya yeh sochke ki pasta bhi toh khate hi hai.” (Well, I do not understand politics, so I picked up the clip and put it on my Facebook. That day I realized that even Rahul Gandhi does not have fewer followers. I was abused not only in Hindi but also in Italian. I took this thinking we also enjoy eating pasta.)

The comedy special Kapil Sharma: I’m Not Done Yet started streaming online onNetflix on Friday, January 28.
