India U-19 will kick off their preparations for the Junior World Cup when they take on hosts West Indies U-19 in their first warm-up match at the Providence Stadium in Guyana today (January 9). Courtesy of the win in the Asia Cup, Team India is high on confidence and will be entering the ICC event as one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
India have always been a strong contender to win the trophy. In January 2000, Mohammad Kaid-led side won the trophy for the first time while in 2008, Virat Kohli captained the junior team to a title victory.
In 2012, Unmukt Chand hit a match-winning century in the final to lead India to a title win against hosts, Australia. In 2018, Prithvi Shaw was at the helm of affairs when India defeated Australia in New Zealand in the final. In 2020, Priyam Garg captained the team to the final.
Delhi’s Yash Dhull has been given the responsibility this time and he will hope to propel the team to title glory. Hrishikesh Kanitkar will be spearheading the coaching staff, which includes Sairaj Bahutule and Munish Bali. A report in PTI recently suggested that VVS Laxman might also join the team during the ICC event. He took over as the head of the National Cricket Academy in December 2021.
Following the warm-up match against West Indies, India will face Australia on Tuesday (January 11). The Yash Dhull-led side will kick off its U-19 World Cup campaign against South Africa U-19 on Saturday (January 15). They will next face Ireland U-19 and Uganda U-19 on January 19 and 22, respectively.
