Telugu superstar Nani is all set to star in Shyam Singha Roy. The film, slated for a release on December 24, co-stars Sai Pallavi and Krithi Shetty in key roles. While fans are waiting with bated breath to know what’s in store for them, cinephiles are also waiting for Jersey, the Hindi remake of Nani’s hit Telugu film by the same name.
Opening up about the Shahid Kapoor-starrer, Nani shared what he’s heard about the film. “I’ve heard that it has come out superbly well. The producers are really raving about the film,” he said, adding that director Gowtam Tinnanuri also showed him photos from the film.
“He came on the sets of Shyam Singha Roy and showed me a couple of pictures from the film. I’ve seen the trailer, songs and it’s looking very good. I think it will get a lot of love from all over India,” said the actor.
The Natural Star of the Indian cinema also opened up about his takes on remakes and shared that contrary to what people think, remaking is not an easy way out and it’s a big challenge. “What happens is when you have already seen the original and you like it so much then you cannot like any other thing. For example, I have done Jersey and now it’s going to release in a couple of days in Hindi, I know for sure that my cousins or whoever will watch Jersey in Hindi will have a very special connection with the original film, not because the original was better, the remake might even be better but because over time, the original film has become something very special, you will not want to accept it,” he said, adding this is often the case for those who have seen the original film. “But those who haven’t, will love the Hindi version of Jersey,” said Nani.
The actor also took a trip down memory lane and explained his point citing the example of Band Baaja Baaraat and its Tamil remake Aaha Kalyanam. “I did the remake of Band Baaja Baaraat and then it didn’t work at all,” he said, sharing what actually happens when a remake hits the screens.
When Band Baaja Baaraat was released, the first day it was said the film is nice, the second-day people said it’s very nice, and the third day it became a hit. Over the months, the film became a super hit. And years later, people said it’s one of the biggest hits, shared Nani. “So now, after years, I remade that film. My first day morning show has to match up to this image that the film got over the years, not to its first day first show performance. The comparison is not between my first-day first-show performance and Band Baaja Baaraat’s first-day first-show performance, but with what the film became over the years. And will never match. So I think it’s actually quite risky and challenging to do a remake,” he said, adding that he has decided he won’t go for remakes in the future. “But I really have a lot of respect for who do it and who do it right,” he said.
The actor’s decision to not opt for remakes doesn’t have to do with a particular film’s success or failure, but because of the process. “I have just realised that after I watch the film and if I am doing it, I don’t enjoy the process. We should always have those thoughts about how it is shaping up, how this films look by the end of it and I think that’s very exciting. That wakes you up every morning… but if you already have an idea about how the film will look, then it sort of hampers the excitement for me. It’s a very personal thing, so I have decided I will not do any more remakes,” he shared.
Up next, Nani has a double role in Shyam Singha Roy. The actor essays the role of Vasu and Shyam Singha Roy in the supernatural period drama. The actor says that it may have been difficult had he needed to transition between shots, but since he wrapped up his characters in different parts, the process was more exciting than difficult. Ahead of the film’s release, the actor wishes for viewers to have a great experience. “There are a few things I felt while watching the film and I hope the audience also feels those moments. There’s a certain mood for the entire film and I hope they get it. I hope they really enjoy it as much as we want them to,” he said.
