Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has strongly condemned the alleged attempt to commit sacrilege at the Golden Temple in Amritsar and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.

In a series of tweets, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) late on Saturday informed that CM Channi has directed the state police to identify the real conspirators behind the heinous act.

“CM @CharanjitChanni strongly condemned the most unfortunate and heinous act to attempt sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Harimandir Sahib during the path of Sri Rehras Sahib (sic), the CMO tweeted.

The chief minister has directed state police authorities to thoroughly probe into the entire matter to zero in on the underlying motive and real conspirators behind this dastardly act, it added.

According to his office, the Punjab chief minister also called up the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee
(SGPC) President and assured his government’s full support and cooperation to get to the bottom of this case.

Man beaten to death over sacrilege bid

A man was beaten to death in an altercation by angry devotees after he allegedly attempted to commit sacrilege at the Golden Temple in Amritsar yesterday.

According to the police, the incident took place during evening prayers today when the man jumped over the metal railing around the Guru Granth Sahib and allegedly attempted to desecrate the Holy Book of the Sikhs with a sword.

Meanwhile, SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed “shock and disbelief at the most heinous outrage of attempting to commit sacrilege at our highest and the holiest shrine, Sachkhand Shri Harmandar Sahib”.

It is impossible to believe that this could be the act of just one person, Badal said in a statement.
