The league stage of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2021 ends today with Colombo Stars taking on Kandy Warriors in the 2nd match of the day at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. It’s a do-or-die game for both teams and the losing side will crash out of the tournament.
With 3 wins from 7 matches, Colombo sit at the 4th spot in the points table in the five-team event. They do have one win more than Kandy but a poor NRR of -1.087. Hence, Kandy will replace them at the 4th spot if they win the last league stage fixture of the tournament. A win for Colombo will see them qualify for the 2nd round and Kandy finishing the tournament as the last-placed side.
With 231 runs in 7 matches, former national captain Dinesh Chandimal has been Colombo’s go-to batsman. He has struck at 151.97 and breached the 50-run mark once. He is followed by skipper Angelo Matthews, who has 112 runs in 3 matches.
In the bowling department, Dushmantha Chameera has stepped up with 12 scalps. He is followed by Seekkuge Prasanna, who has dismissed 10 batsmen.
Talking of Kandy, capped batsman Charith Asalanka has struck 150 runs for the team and is followed by Kennar Lewis, who has 147 runs. In the bowling department, N Vimukthi leads the charts with 7 scalps.
Going into the contest, the equation for both teams is clear and only a win will do the job at this stage. The 2nd round of the tournament kicks off on December 19 while the final will be played on December 23.
