Released by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before the IPL 2022 mega auction, David Warner is unlikely to be picked by any of the two new franchises as he has hinted at entering the auction. Given Warner’s success with SRH, he was expected to draw the interest of both franchises.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case. Replying to a user on Instagram, Warner has hinted that he hasn’t been contacted by any franchise and that he will most likely be in the mega auction.
One of the most successful openers in IPL history, Warner had a dream run with SRH after joining the franchise in 2014. He piled up runs 4014 for them, most for SRH, and also excelled on the captaincy front. SRH’s only IPL-winning captain so far, Warner had led them to title glory in 2016.
He had the team management’s backing and was reinstated as the captain in 2020 despite Kane Williamson’s success in the past two seasons. SRH’s below-par run in the first half of IPL 2021, where they only managed 1 win in the first six matches, saw Warner being sacked and dropped from the playing XI.
The IPL veteran did make his comeback in the playing XI but was benched after 2 matches in the UAE leg. He often hinted at being released and as it turned to be, Warner isn’t part of SRH now. The Orange Army retained skipper Williamson along with uncapped players Abdul Samad and Umran Malik.
Despite his struggles in IPL 2021, he could be in the plans of some of the IPL franchises as a few teams need a new captain. Following a dry run at IPL, Warner made a terrific comeback in T20 World Cup 2021 and scored 289 runs.
A former Australia vice-captain, Warner has scored 10308 in 313 T20s. The IPL 2022 mega auction is likely to take place in January.
