West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi against the Centre’s decision of extending the BSF’s jurisdiction in the state.
The Central government has amended the BSF Act to empower the border guarding force to carry out search, seizure and arrest within a 50 km stretch, up from the existing 15 km, from the international border in West Bengal and Punjab and Assam.
Banerjee has slammed the Centre for extending the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF) and accused it of trying to interfere with the federal structure of the country.
TMC MP Saugata Roy said that the Trinamool Congress will move a resolution against the Centre’s decision in the West Bengal Assembly next week.
“The step will be an interference in state’s jurisdiction. We will raise this issue in Parliament. Border fencing should be done by the Centre, the State is also supporting this,” he said.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee on Friday said that the resolution will be moved on November 16 and a discussion will be held.
“Under rule 185 of the assembly, we will bring in a resolution next week in the assembly to discuss how enhancing the jurisdiction of the BSF is a direct attack on the federal structure of the country,” he said, PTI reported.
On Thursday, the Punjab Assembly had also adopted a resolution against the Centre’s decision, calling it an “insult” to the state police and sought its withdrawal.
