The Centre on Wednesday (November 3) slashed excise duties on petrol by Rs 5 a litre and on diesel by Rs 10 a litre on the eve of Diwali in an attempt to give relief to the common man reeling under the impact of boiling auto fuel prices. Taking a cue from the Union government, several states such as Karnataka, Assam, Gujarat, Goa, Uttarakhand among others have cut petrol and diesel prices in their respective areas by bringing down the value-added tax (VAT) attached to the auto fuel prices.
Assam
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed through a tweet saying, “Heartening to learn Central Govt decision to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel. In consonance with the decision of Honble PM @narendramodi, I am pleased to announce that Assam Govt will also reduce VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs 7/- with immediate effect.”
Goa
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant tweeted, “The Modi Govt. has given a great Diwali gift to all Indians, by announcing a reduction in Excise Duty on Petrol and Diesel. I thank the Hon’ble PM @narendramodi Ji as this decision shall give great relief to the common man and help control inflation.”
“In addition, Government of Goa shall reduce an additional Rs 7 on Petrol and Rs 7 on Diesel, thereby reducing the price of diesel by Rs 17 per litre and petrol by Rs 12 per litre,” he further said.
Manipur
Govt of Manipur will also reduce VAT on petrol and diesel each by Rs 7 with immediate effect, said Manipur CM N Biren Singh.
Karnataka
Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai also announced a VAT cut in a series of tweets.
Tripura
Tripura also joined the list of states that reduced VAT after the government’s excise duty cut decision. Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb tweeted, “Following Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji led central govt’s decision on reduction of excise duty on petrol & diesel. #Tripura govt has also decided to reduce petrol & diesel cost by ₹ 7 from tomorrow.”
“After central and state governments deduction in fuel prices, petrol and diesel will be cheaper by ₹12 and ₹17 respectively in #Tripura from tomorrow. A happier#Diwali for the 37 lakh people of #Tripura,” Deb further said.
Gujarat
A statement from Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s office said the state government has decided to slash the VAT on petrol and diesel in the state following the central government decision to reduce excise duty on it.
Bihar
In Bihar also, there will be a further reduction of state VAT by Rs 1.30 on Petrol and Rs 1.90 on Diesel over and above Rs 5 & 10 Rs reduction on excise duty. Effectively Petrol will be cheaper by Rs 6.30 & Diesel by Rs 11.90 per litre in Bihar. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that his government will be providing additional relief of Rs 2 per litre on petrol.
Uttar Pradesh
The Uttar Pradesh government also slashed Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to bring down their prices. A state official said the reduction in the levies will overall bring down the fuel prices by ₹12 per litre in UP.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath earlier indicated the reduction at a meeting on VAT on October 28. The state government imposed a VAT of 26.8% or ₹18.74 per litre, whichever was higher, on petrol and 48% or ₹10.41 per litre, whichever was higher, on diesel.
Sikkim
Sikkim chief minister Prem Singh Tamang on Thursday announced a reduction in taxes on petrol and diesel by ₹7 per litre, hours after the central government reduced excise duty on fuel. Petrol would now be cheaper by ₹12 per litre and diesel by ₹17 per litre in the state.
Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand has announced a reduction in VAT on petrol by ₹2 per litre in the state. With this, petrol prices in Uttarakhand are going down by ₹7 per litre.
Odisha
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday announced a reduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) of ₹3 each on petrol and diesel, which will be applicable from midnight of November 5.
Earlier today, the central government reduced the excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10, respectively. The decision will come into effect from Thursday. The reduction in excise duty on diesel will be double that of petrol.
Appreciating the move, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted, “Welcome the Centre’s decision to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹5 and ₹10 respectively from tomorrow. This is a responsible decision from the #ModiGovt to bring relief to consumers”.
“The decision of the Centre to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel also sets the template for the state govts to follow suit. Concrete action from state govts will lead to further reduction in fuel price and more relief to consumers,” Pradhan further said.
Jammu & Kashmir
Jammu & Kashmir is the latest to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel after the Centre announced reduction in excise duty. The union territory announced Rs 7 reduction in VAT on both petrol and diesel. With this, petrol price in the UT came down by Rs.12/litre & diesel prices by Rs.17 per litre from today.
