The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) have confirmed the retention policy for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season to the ten franchises. With the addition of two new teams, the cash-rich league is set to see a mega-auction next season. 

According to Cricbuzz, the teams have been informed that the existing eight franchises will get to retain a maximum of four players which could be either three Indians and one overseas player or two local and two foreign players each. Teams can also not retain more than two uncapped players. 

On the other hand, the two new teams will have the option to pick three players outside the auction who have not been retained. They will have the option of picking 2 Indians and one overseas player. Similarly, they can choose a maximum of one uncapped player. 

BCCI in a mail to the franchises wrote, “The window for the 8 existing teams to retain the players will be from the 1st November 2021 to 30th November 2021. Thereafter the 2 new teams will have the window to retain the players starting from 1st December 2021 to 25th December 2021.”

Further, the governing body for the sport in India also confirmed the money they will lose from their salary cap if they decide to retain players. If a team retains four players, they will lose ₹42 crores from their budget. The first retained players will cost ₹16 crores, the second will come for ₹12 crores, the third will be ₹8 crores, and the fourth player will be for ₹6 crores. 

Meanwhile, if a team decided to retain three players, they will see ₹33 crores cut from the salary cap whereas teams that retain two or one player will lose ₹24 and ₹12 crores respectively.
