Despite Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) exit from the 2021 Indian Premier League (2021), their decision to sack David Warner from captaincy and drop him from playing XI is set to leave massive aftershocks. With a mega-auction scheduled for 2022, Warner has in all possibilities played his last game for the franchise.
However, SRH fans have made their disappointment at the situation public and demanded the owners to retain him ahead of the 2022 season. A group of fans have written an open letter to the owners expressing their anger at Warner’s treatment in 2021 and made #NoWarnerNoSrh a top trend on Twitter in a bid to bring attention to their cause.
In the letter, the SRH fanbase called Warner the ‘face of the franchise’ and asked their owners to ‘acknowledge their emotions at this point in time.’ They also said that Warner leaving them in the last thing they want to see after a hard campaign like they had in 2021.
After a poor start to the campaign, Warner was sacked from captaincy and dropped from the side for their 7th match of the season against Rajasthan Royals during the India leg of IPL 2021. While he played SRH’s first two games in the UAE leg, he was left out of the playing XI once again and did not feature after that.
After being left out of the team, Warner did not sit in the dug-out for any of the games with his teammates. He did not travel to the stadium for a few games while later he was spotted in the stands.
The former SRH skipper had a miserable campaign as the franchise finished in last place. Warner managed to score only 195 runs in 8 matches with a below-par average and strike rate of 24.37 and 107.73 respectively.
In his time with SRH, Warner won the orange cap three times and also led them to their only title victory in 2016.
