The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Amit Khare as Advisor to the Prime Minister and Prime Minister’s Office in the rank and scale of a Secretary to the government of India. The role is on a contract basis initially for two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Before this, Khare was the Secretary of the Human Resource Development.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Khare’s appointment on terms and conditions as applicable to re-employed officers of Secretary-level.

An IAS officer of the 1985 batch from Bihar/Jharkhand cadre, Khare had a key role in unearthing the infamous fodder scam in Bihar in the 1990s, implicating Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Khare has earlier also held the post of Secretary – Information & Broadcasting.

His last achievement before retirement was to un-shape the National Education Policy 2020, an ambitious initiative of the current NDA dispensation.
