Government to provide 12-digit unique number to 380 million informal workers

 In a significant initiative for the unorganized workers in the country, the ministry of labour and employment will launch an online portal- e-SHRAM portal on 26th August. With this initiative, the government to deliver benefits of social security schemes to all the unorganized workers.

The union labour and employment ministry will provide a 12-digit unique account number to each of the 380 million informal workers as part of its exercise to create a national database.

Labour Minister Bhupender Yadav tweeted, “Just two days before the e-Shram portal is launched, unveiled its logo. As envisaged by PM Shri @narendramodi ji, the portal will be the national database of our nation builders, our Shram Yogis. The portal will help take welfare schemes to their doorstep.”

“Interacted with leaders of major trade unions. Happy to note that they have extended their support for e-Shram and offered constructive suggestions for the successful implementation and functioning of the e-Shram portal,” Yadav further added.

After months of delay and the Supreme Court’s criticism of labour ministry’s slow pace of action, the database will finally be rolled out on Thursday and it will allow enrolment of workers in the informal sector, gig economy and also of firms having less than 10 employees.

Each worker enrolled in the database will be given a 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) and a card containing demographic details. The move will allow portability of welfare schemes and flow of monetary and non-monetary benefits during times of crisis. 

Trade unions will play a role in populating the database and creating awareness among workers, with states key implementing authorities. Each state will set up a monitoring unit to track the progress made and how to better implementation related glitches under this initiative.

EPFO said in a tweet, “Every Unorganized Worker, even the one standing in last line, will be linked with various Social Security schemes through e-SHRAM Portal, a National Database of Unorganized Workers, to be launched on 26th August, 2021”.
