Physio’s absence for a day makes no difference: WFI responds to Vinesh Phogat’s story on Tokyo 2020 struggles

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics has given India plenty of memories to cherish for a lifetime but there were also a few disappointments. Vinesh Phogat, one of the nation’s biggest medal contenders at the Olympic Games, returned without a medal after being beaten in her quarter-finals contest. The wrestler even highlighted the issues she encountered in the campaign but the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) isn’t on board.

Phogat entered the 2020 Tokyo Games as the top-seed in her weight category but couldn’t reach a medal round. Post her exit, Phogat said that Phogat said that the fact that her physio wasn’t allowed to travel with her, did have an impact on her performance in Tokyo. WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar, however, isn’t of the opinion that the physio’s absence for a day or two makes any difference.

“Ek aadha din mein koi farak nahi padta ke physio na ho toh perform nahi kar sakte mat pe (a physio not being there for a day makes no difference to the performance on the mat),” he was quoted as saying by The Indian Express on Friday.

“There were many physios there. It’s no such thing that your own physio will know where the problem is. XYZ, everyone can help. The federation knew that if a player can’t perform at their best, they will put an allegation that ‘my physio was not sent, my coach was not sent…’ Last year, she was given everything she asked for – sab suvidhaye diya tha,” Tomar further asserted.

The Indian wrestling contingent, consisting of four female and three male grapplers, had one common physio Brajesh Kumar. Vinesh alleged that she was given a physio from the shooting team but that physio couldn’t understand the tweaks her body needed.

“I was reducing weight. I was my own physio and I was the wrestler. I was assigned a physio from the shooting team. She did not understand my body. My sport has very specific demands,” Phogat wrote in a column for the Indian Express on Friday.

“She couldn’t help me with what my regular physio used to. Last day, when I am reducing weight, am I supposed to explain things to her on how things are done in wrestling, or focus on myself? It’s unfair on both of us…”

Disappointed with the entire Tokyo Olympics episode, Vinesh has said that there is a possibility of her not stopping onto the mat ever again.
