Delhi Court grants bail to BJP’s Ashwini Upadhyay, arrested for inflammatory sloganeering near Jantar Mantar

A Delhi Court on Wednesday granted bail to BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay, who was arrested in connection with inflammatory sloganeering near Jantar Mantar. A case was registered against him on Monday after a video showing anti-Muslim slogans being raised during a protest at Jantar Mantar surfaced on social media.

“Ashwani Upadhyay and others involved in Sunday (August 8)’s incident to be arrested. Delhi Police is handling the matter as per law and any communal disharmony will not be tolerated,” the police had said.

Along with Upadhyay, five others including Vinod Sharma, Deepak Singh, Vinit Kranti, Preet Singh and Deepak were arrested. They were presented via video conferencing before Duty Metropolitan Magistrate Tanvi Khurana.

Delhi DCP Deepak Yadav had stated, “People who had gathered at Jantar Mantar had no permission. It has come to our due notice that some people raised inciting and objectionable slogans as well. We have also received a video and have registered FIR in the case,” adding, “We’re carrying out further investigation into the matter. Necessary action will be taken at the earliest.” 

On Tuesday, Taking to Twitter, Upadhyay said in Hindi, “Never imagined that seculars would get so angry for demanding abolition of English laws and implementation of uniform code. A man hanged himself at Jantar Mantar.  Was Kejriwal questioned for that? I have never met or seen the people in the video.”

On Monday, he had tweeted, “Whether I stay or not English law should be abolished and Uniform Education, Uniform Medicine, Uniform Tax Code, Uniform Penal Code, Uniform Labor Code, Uniform Police Code, Uniform Judicial Code, Uniform Civil Code, Uniform Religious Code and Uniform Population Code should apply.”
