Legendary Indian boxer Mary Kom bowed out of Tokyo Olympics after losing her round of 16 match against Colombia’s Ingrit Valencia. In what looked like a close contest, the six-time world champion lost to the Rio Olympics’ Bronze medallist 3-2. Despite the loss, what caught everybody’s attention was how gracious was Kom even after her defeat where he hugged her opponent and acknowledged the crowd.
Social media was flooded with messages of respect for Mary. Abhinav Bindra and Mahesh Bhupathi were some of the first few sportspersons who took to Twitter to laud Kom.
“Only admiration and respect for @MangteC !” tweeted Bindra – India’s only Gold medallist in an individual event.
I don’t know what to say I still can’t believe myself and don’t know what to say. Everybody is watching the match, they know who is winning. I am disappointed about the decision,” she told Times Now in Tokyo.
“I have done so much for IOC and their task force but in this boxing arena, I fought and what decision was made. I don’t know what’s wrong with them, I am so disappointed,” the 38-year-old added.
