Hours after Trinamool Congress said that Mamata Banerjee’s scheduled meeting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and other Opposition leaders may pave the way for a better coalition against the Central government, the grand old party said “this isn’t a new invitation from her.”

Congress MP Pradip Bhattacharya said that the party will take a final decision on invitation by Mamata Banerjee.

“Sonia Gandhi had many times invited parties to discuss and fight BJP’s atrocities and anti-democratic actions but TMC didn’t attend some meetings,” he added.

‘All opposition parties, under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi, should come forward’

In January 2020, the TMC supremo did not attend the meeting of opposition parties called by Sonia Gandhi against the new citizenship law (CAA) and proposed a nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Bhattacharya further said that time is coming when people of the country want an alternative political force.

“All opposition parties, under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi, should come forward and unite themselves so they can fight BJP in the ensuing 2024 Lok Sabha elections,” he said.

‘Open for an alliance with TMC at the national and state level’

This statement from the Congress MP comes after West Bengal Congress vice-president Diptiman Ghosh hinted that the grand old party is open for an alliance with the TMC at the national and the state level.

While Congress wants the opposition to unite under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi, TMC has said that the “glorious leadership of Mamata Banerjee is going to play a significant contributory role to the evolution of a very strong Opposition”.

TMC will play a contributory role of strong opposition against the “fascist” role of the Centre, said party spokesperson Om Prakash Mishra.

Earlier on Thursday, the West Bengal Chief Minister had said she will visit Delhi during the ongoing Monsoon Session and will meet several leaders including the President and the Prime Minister if given an appointment.

This would be the first visit of Banerjee after her party’s thumping victory in the Bengal Assembly election.
