After days of an internal rift between Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and party leader Navjot Singh Sindhu, Congress on Thursday seemed to have resolved the issue between the two politicians ahead of the assembly elections.

Veteran leader Harish Rawat, who is the Congress General Secretary and in charge of Punjab, today said that Captian Amarinder Singh will remain the chief minister and the grand old party will go to polls under his leadership.

“Captain Amarinder Singh is our CM for the last four-and-a-half years and we will go to the elections with his leadership,” he said. 

Asserting that Captain Amarinder and Sidhu will work together in the state, he hinted that Sidhu may become state Congress chief, while Singh remains the CM. “A formula has been made around this, we have also made a formula for the Working Presidents,” Rawat said.

Navjot Singh Sidhu is at loggerheads with Punjab CM Amarinder Singh over several issues. The central leadership of Congress trying to end factionalism in the state unit ahead of assembly polls early next year.

The Congress’ top leadership formed a panel to resolve the issue and held several meetings with the two leaders in Delhi in the last few days as Congress was looking to fix the problem at the earliest. 

Sidhu met the panel and also had meetings with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The Chief Minister, who also met the panel, later met party chief Sonia Gandhi.

It was earlier speculated that Congress will appoint a new party chief in the state and there will be changes in the Punjab cabinet
