Hima Das to miss Tokyo Olympics due to injury, vows to make a strong comeback

Ace sprinter Hima Das is all set to miss the upcoming Tokyo Olympics after sustaining an untimely injury. Das took to Twitter on Tuesday (July 06) to inform her fans and followers that she will not be travelling to Tokyo this year. The 21-year-old said she was close to achieving the qualification mark in the 100m and 200m category but will miss the bus due to injury.

Das had picked up a hamstring injury in June this year while running 100m heats. She was part of the women’s 4x100m relay team which failed to qualify for the Games. She also competed in the women’s 100m and women’s 200m looking to secure an Olympics berth but failed to do so.

Das thanked her coaches and teammates in a tweet on Tuesday and vowed to make a strong comeback from her injury. The Dhing Express is looking forward to the Commonwealth Games next year and the Asian Games 2022 along with the World Championships to bring glory for India.

“I will miss my first Olympics due to untimely injury when I was close to achieve the qualification standard in my new event 100m and 200m. I would like to thank my coaches, support staff, and my teammates for their continuous support. But I will make a strong comeback and looking forward to Commonwealth Games 2022, Asian Games 2022, and World Championship 2022,” she wrote in a tweet.

Hima, who had shot to fame after her gold medal in 400m at U20 World Championships held at Tampere, Finland, in 2018, has since gone on to win several medals at the international level. However, she shifted from 400m to 200m in January last year, leaving her with very little time to secure Olympics qualification.

She tried hard to make the cut but failed to do so earlier this year before the injury acted as the final nail in the coffin to end her hopes of making it to the Tokyo Games.
