Kailash Kher on politics in music industry: There were times I was sidetracked

Nepotism and favouritism are two words that have been often used in relation to the Hindi film and music industry. Many singers from Bollywood feel that in many instances, preferences come into play and not talent. Allah Ke Bande hitmaker Kailash Kher, too, revealed that politics exists in the music industry.

The singer-composer and a Padma Shri awardee spoke to Times Now Digital exclusively and recalled some of his bad experiences in the Bollywood music industry.

“There have been times when someone else was favoured and I was sidetracked. You get used to heartaches. Dreams are shown and then hopes get shattered. Humans have qualities of jealousy, anger and have a criticising nature within them,” he said.

Even though Kailash made a mark for himself in India’s music scene with chartbusters like Teri Deewani and Allah Ke Bande from Waise Bhi Hota Hai Part II, the singer has faced his share of struggles as well. In fact, he revealed that there was a time when he even felt suicidal.

“Before my career in the music industry, life was tough. I wanted to finish myself. I thought I would not be alive as I ran from home at a young age. Such thoughts come when you go through tough times,” he said.

However, Kailash admits that thinking of ending his life was a mistake. “You survive and can earn money by taking the wrong path. By god’s grace, I chose to stay hungry but not get on the wrong path. I had seen the real-life, before coming to Mumbai,” he said.

Like a magician who knows to cast a spell with his magic tactics, Kailash captivated the hearts of millions with his soulful voice. But not many understood him when he was just starting out. “People come to Mumbai to be a singer or an actor. I came to do my album. I was looking for an associate musician, who could put sensibilities to my music. People used to call me aawara (rogue). I was stubborn since my childhood. People interpret stubbornness differently. People who are different are demoralised as they do not fit the condition,” he said.

But things clearly worked out for the singer as he went on to sing several popular numbers. He has crooned songs like Chak De Phattey! (Khosla Ka Ghosla, 2006), Chak Lein De (from Chandni Chowk to China, 2008), and Kaun Hai Voh (from Baahubali: The Beginning, 2015), among many others.
