Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar has been arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with the murder of a 23-year-old wrestler Sagar Rana. Rana was killed in an ugly brawl that took place at the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi on May 04. Sushil was absconding for almost three weeks after the incident before being trapped by Delhi Police’s Special Cell on Sunday (May 23) from Delhi’s Mundka area.

Sushil has been taken into six-day custody with the Crime Branch investigating the matter. The two-time Olympic medallist turned 39 on Wednesday (May 26). He celebrated his birthday alone in the lock-up and reportedly stayed ‘numb’ throughout. A senior officer informed that Sushil’s parents had come to visit him but were denied permission.

“His family members approached us as they wanted to meet him but they were denied. We passed on the birthday wishes to Mr. Kumar, however, he didn’t react. His body language shows that he is regretting his action,” the officer was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

Sushil reportedly demanded ‘wrestler’s diet’ in jail but his request was turned down and he was provided the food available in the police mess. As per The Hindu, Sushil is being monitored continuously by the Delhi Police. He remains quiet all day and has answered only a few questions

On Tuesday, Sushil was taken to the Chhatrasal Stadium by the Crime Branch to recreate the crime scene. He reportedly also broke down during interrogation and kept changing statements while not cooperating in the investigation.

As per a report in India Today, a total of 8 eye-witnesses have testified against the wrestler, who has been nabbed along with four others who are accused in the murder case of Harayana wrestler Sagar Rana. The Delhi Police reportedly also used as psychological expert as part of the interrogation process as Sushil was not cooperating in the investigation.

One of the most decorated wrestlers in the country, Sushil has had a great fall from grace
