Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, the 1985-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Maharashtra cadre, was on Tuesday appointed as the new Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director for two years.

Prior to his appointment as the CBI chief, Jaiswal was serving as the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) chief. His name was cleared for the coveted post after a three-member selection committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 24 shortlisted Jaiswal’s name.

Besides, the PM, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury were the other two members in the panel. Notably, Chowdhury has raised objections to Jaiswal’s appointment.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has based on the panel recommended by the Committee, approved the appointment of Shri Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH: 1985) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office or until further orders whichever is earlier,” the ACC order stated.

Jaiswal earlier served as the director-general of Maharashtra Police, was also associated with the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad, Maharashtra police special investigation team (SIT), state Reserve Police Force and the state Intelligence Bureau.

The new CBI director was also a part of the investigation in regards to 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the 2006 serial blasts in the Maharashtra capital.

Jaiswal was also associated with the probes into the Elgar Parishad and Bhima Koregaon violence cases. He also served as the Additional Police Commissioner in Pune.

IPS officer has vast experience in intelligence gathering as he had been part of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Special Protection Group (SPG) and Intelligence Bureau.
