Gurmeet on COVID-19 second outbreak: We were scared, did not take vaccination

The second wave of COVID-19 created more damage in India than the first one last year. While the state and central governments are trying to help people, several Bollywood and TV personalities also took it upon themselves to provide aid in this hour of crisis. TV and film actor Gurmeet Choudhary, too, has been actively helping people find required resources as the country fights the pandemic.

During an exclusive interview with Times Now Digital, the Ramayan actor talked about the pandemic and why he feels people were initially hesitant in being vaccinated.

“We were all scared. We did not take the vaccination. I feel last year, we, the public, wasted a lot of time. Many Whatsapp forwarded messages claimed that people are dying due to heart attack post-vaccination. Today, we know that many people who have taken the vaccination did contract COVID-19 but they have had mild symptoms and have recovered,” he said.

Gurmeet also said that there is no denying the fact that people did make mistakes once the cases started reducing after the first wave. “We made mistakes. We did not wear a mask, follow social distancing. We need to understand that it is a war-like situation. We need to fight it together. The government is telling us to wear a mask. We need to take responsibility,” Gurmeet said.

The actor has been hailed as a hero because he is helping in fighting the COVID-19 outbreak. He feels that at some point it was mentally exhausting for him. “When I spoke to people, initially, it was very disturbing. I used to not get sleep at night. I got a video, where a person wanted to save his mother. We tried a lot (to help) and then later we came to know that his mother is not there. It was disturbing. Mentally you feel weak, but eventually, you become strong. I wanted to save more lives,” the actor said

Gurmeet, who had once essayed the role of Lord Ram in Ramayan, has been a saviour for many COVID-19 victims. Talking about why he felt the need to do this, he said, “I have always done something or the other for people. When an actor works, he or she has to motivate people. Knowing the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in India, we all have to come ahead and help people. Since childhood, I wanted to do something for the people of the country. I have been a fan of APJ Abdul Kalam and of Karna from Mahabharat.”
