Dipali Chavan-Mohite, the female Range Forest Officer posted in the Melghat Tiger Reserve (MRT) in Maharashtra’s Amravati, has allegedly committed suicide. As per officials, a suicide note has been recovered, in which Dipali has purportedly claimed sexual harassment and torture at the hands of an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer.
The 28-year-old RFO reportedly shot herself with the service revolver at her official quarters in the Harisal village late last night. Her relatives and colleagues found her body and the gun later.
When asked about the shocking incident, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. “No guilty will be spared,” added Deshmukh.
Deemed a no-nonsense officer, Dipali was also known as ‘Lady Singham’ for her daredevilry against the forest mafia. Her husband Rajesh Mohite works as a Treasury Officer in Chikhaldhara.
At the time of Dipali’s death, her mother was in Satara and her husband was at work.
Earlier today, the RFO’s family refused to conduct the last rites till the Amravati Police held the accused named in her four-page suicide note.
Police detained Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Vinod Shivkumar, whose name was mentioned in Dipali’s suicide note, at the Nagpur railway station in the morning hours, said Amravati Superintendent of Police (rural) Dr Hari Balaji N. Shivkumar was at the railway station to catch a train to Karnataka’s Bengaluru.
In the note, Dipali wrote that for the past few months, Shivkumar had been abusing his position to harass her sexually and inflict mental trauma on her.
It has also been reported that Dipali had approached MTR Field Director, MS Reddy (IFS) to complain about Shivkumar. However, all her pleas were reportedly ignored by Reddy.
Dipali had joined the Maharashtra government service in 2013.
