Amajor political buzz has emerged around a possible merger between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Congress party, with discussions reportedly moving forward. Mamata Banerjee is said to be open to the idea after an offer from Sonia Gandhi, but she has also placed some conditions through Abhishek Banerjee during talks with Rahul Gandhi.
Conditions Put Before Congress Leadership
According to sources, Abhishek Banerjee discussed these conditions during his meeting with Rahul Gandhi. The TMC leader has reportedly demanded that Mamata Banerjee be sent to the Rajya Sabha and also be given the post of Leader of Opposition in the Upper House. However, there is no official response from the Congress side yet.
Offer Made by Sonia Gandhi
It is reported that Sonia Gandhi personally called Mamata Banerjee and offered a merger of TMC into Congress. In return, Mamata Banerjee would be made the national vice president of the Congress party. Additionally, Abhishek Banerjee would be appointed party general secretary.
Mamata Banerjee Asked for Time
Sources say Sonia Gandhi also suggested that TMC should merge with Congress due to increasing political attacks from the BJP. She reportedly warned that otherwise TMC could face pressure similar to the Aam Aadmi Party. It was also mentioned that internal party issues could make things difficult for Abhishek Banerjee.
Mamata Banerjee reportedly asked for a few days to consider the proposal.
Rahul–Abhishek Meeting Lasted 90 Minutes
Speculation about the merger intensified after Mamata Banerjee met Sonia Gandhi twice at her residence, 10 Janpath, on June 8 and 9. The meetings were described as warm, with both leaders even embracing each other.
Later, Rahul Gandhi and Abhishek Banerjee also met. According to sources, their meeting at 10 Janpath lasted about 90 minutes.
