Telangana CM Revanth Reddy’s ‘inspired by Hitler’ remark triggers row; BJP seeks apology, slams ‘Emergency mindset,’ what exactly did he say?

Afresh political controversy has erupted after Revanth Reddy made remarks linking the state’s anti-encroachment task force to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. His comments have triggered strong reactions from opposition parties, especially the BJP and the BRS.

Speaking at a conclave in Bengaluru, the Telangana Chief Minister said that the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) was inspired by Hitler’s alleged liking for the word “Hydra.” He claimed that Hitler’s core group was called “Hydra” and that he drew inspiration from it while naming the agency.

What exactly did Revanth Reddy say?

Reddy stated that “Hydra” was Hitler’s favourite word and referred to a group capable of carrying out assassinations. He added that he used this idea while conceptualising HYDRAA. The remark quickly went viral and sparked criticism across political circles.

However, historians and experts were quick to challenge the claim. They pointed out that there is no factual evidence linking Hitler or his inner circle to the term “Hydra.” Instead, the term has historical references to other contexts, including military operations during World War II.

Why are opposition parties angry?

The BJP strongly criticised Reddy’s comments. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused him of promoting a “dangerous mindset” and questioned whether the Congress leadership, including Rahul Gandhi, would take action.

Poonawalla said the remarks reflect an “Emergency-like thinking,” referring to the period of the Emergency imposed under Indira Gandhi. He also alleged that such statements show authoritarian tendencies within the Congress.

Is there a larger political angle?

The controversy deepened after Reddy’s comments on regional imbalance. He reportedly raised concerns about leadership positions being dominated by leaders from North India and questioned whether southern states were being treated unfairly despite contributing heavily in taxes.

The BJP termed these remarks divisive, accusing Reddy of attempting to create a North-South divide.
