Delhi Riots case: Sharjeel Imam gets interim bail after 6 Years, to attend brother’s wedding, celebrate Eid with family after…

Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the alleged larger conspiracy related to the Delhi riots, has been granted interim bail on humanitarian grounds. After spending nearly six years in jail, he was released on Friday. He has been given temporary relief to attend his brother’s wedding and celebrate Eid with his family. Imam has been in jail since 2020 and was lodged in Tihar Jail. Following the court’s order, he walked out of prison on Friday. Photos and videos of his release have also surfaced, showing him leaving in a car.

The court made it clear that this is only temporary bail, and he must surrender by March 30 under all circumstances.

Court Grants Limited Relief, Rejects Longer Bail Request

The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai at the Karkardooma Court. During the hearing, Imam’s lawyer informed the court that his brother’s wedding is scheduled for March 25 and that Imam is a key support for his family.

The defense also argued that Imam has spent over five years in jail without violating any rules. While the defense requested six weeks of bail, the court granted only 10 days, considering the seriousness of the case.

The court said it tried to balance humanitarian concerns with the gravity of the allegations.

Serious Charges Under UAPA

Imam has been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Delhi Police alleges that his speeches during protests against CAA and NRC were inflammatory and contributed to the 2020 violence in Northeast Delhi.

Police claim the violence was part of a larger conspiracy and that Imam played a role in spreading unrest. However, Imam has denied all the allegations against him.

Supreme Court Earlier Denied Regular Bail

Another accused in the case is Umar Khalid, a former student of Jawaharlal Nehru University. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court of India rejected the regular bail pleas of both Imam and Khalid.

Strict Conditions and Security in Place

During Imam’s temporary release, security agencies remain alert. Authorities have ensured proper arrangements so that all bail conditions are followed. The court has clearly stated that any violation of the conditions will lead to immediate cancellation of bail. Meanwhile, his release has sparked discussions in political and social circles. It remains to be seen whether Imam will surrender on time after the given period ends.
