A row erupted on social media after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a video alleged to be AI-generated highway footage.
The row started after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday, praised the road and highway infrastructure in Assam and posted a 26-second video clip of an Assam highway. The video showed aerial footage of traffic moving smoothly on a busy highway in the state.
However, Sarma’s post drew flak on social media, as people alleged that the video had been created using artificial intelligence.
Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh said, “The BJP IT Cell, while generating fake AI videos, should remember that the penalty for driving on the wrong side of a National Highway is ₹5,000. Wrong-side motor driving at full F1 speed, as claimed by the CM.”
Singh also shared images of pothole-ridden and damaged roads while criticizing Assam’s Chief Minister. He remarked that it is disgraceful for the CM to rely on fabricated AI videos to highlight road improvements, especially when the roads in Tinsukia are so poor that BJP Assam had to cancel a local roadshow amid public anger.
“Shame that @CMOfficeAssam has to use fake AI-generated videos to show road infrastructure development in Assam. Meanwhile, this is the reality of roads in Assam. The situation of roads in Tinsukia is so bad that @BJP4Assam had to cancel its local roadshow due to public backlash. Reel vs Real,” Singh said.
In response, Chief Minister Sarma shared the video again with the caption: “Artificial Intelligence (red X), Assam Infrastructure (green tick).”
Assam Food Minister Kaushik Rai hit back at the criticism, saying that the development is so real that some Congress supporters are calling it AI.
In a post on X, Rai said, “Development is so real that some Congress supporters are calling it AI. Take a look at the actual raw footage from the archives.”
In a post on X, Hazarika said, “People with the negative IQ level of Rahul and Gaurav Gogoi will obviously struggle to digest the pace at which Assam’s infrastructure is transforming. That’s why they have conveniently started calling such visuals “AI-generated.” But here’s a simple question: will they now call this video as AI too? For their information, this clip is from the same road, on the same day, during our Jana Ashirwad Yatra.”
Sharing a video captioned “Silapathar to Jonai – National Highway at night,” Assam Minister of Industries and Commerce Bimal Borah said, “For chamchas, even this is A
