‘Unacceptable and shocking’: Scindia slams extravagant arrangements for BSNL Director in Prayagraj

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia  strongly criticised the reported lavish arrangements made for a senior BSNL official, calling the episode “improper” and a clear breach of established norms. He confirmed that a show cause notice has been served and appropriate action will follow.

The controversy surfaced after reports detailed extensive protocol preparations for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Director Vivek Bansal ahead of his proposed visit to Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Responding to questions from the media, Scindia said the matter had been brought to his attention and he found the reported arrangements unacceptable.

“I have stated clearly that this is improper and against established rules and traditions. It is unacceptable and shocking. We are in the 21st century such conduct cannot be justified,” the minister said.

He added that a show-cause notice has already been issued to the Director, giving him seven days to submit his explanation. “We will take appropriate action based on his response,” Scindia said.

Emphasising the importance of discipline and adherence to protocol in public service, the government said that any deviation from institutional norms undermines governance standards and will not be tolerated.

The issue gained traction after an internal order from the Prayagraj Deputy General Manager’s office reportedly outlined detailed arrangements involving nearly 50 officers and staff members over two days. The plan allegedly assigned personnel to manage 21 different responsibilities linked to the visit.

Reports suggested that the itinerary included boat rides, temple visits, a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, and even the preparation of bathing kits containing items such as towels, oil, combs and undergarments. Officers were also tasked with coordinating transport, arranging suits, clicking photographs, and stocking vehicles with refreshments including water bottles, chocolates and snacks.

The document, which circulated widely on social media, drew criticism over the scale of preparations and the apparent use of public sector resources for what seemed to be a largely personal itinerary.

Following the uproar, Bansal’s scheduled visit was cancelled. BSNL, which recently reported quarterly losses exceeding Rs 1,300 crore, has not yet issued an official statement explaining how such elaborate arrangements were approved.
