Prime Minister Narendra Modi met India’s Grand Mufti Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar in New Delhi for a detailed discussion on social harmony, minority welfare and national development. The meeting brought together religious leadership and the government at a time when inclusive growth and community participation remain key talking points in public life.

Who is Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad?

Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar, also known as Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, is one of India’s most respected Islamic scholars. Born in 1931 in Kerala, he is widely regarded as a senior leader of the Sunni Muslim community and is often referred to as the Grand Mufti of India. He is known for promoting a peaceful, inclusive and Sufi-oriented interpretation of Islam. Over the decades, he has been associated with several educational and social welfare initiatives, especially in Kerala, and enjoys recognition at international forums as well.

Key Issues Raised During the Meeting

During the interaction, several important topics were discussed. These included social, humanitarian, educational and developmental matters, along with minority welfare concerns. The Grand Mufti shared feedback gathered during his recent Kerala visit, which was organised under the theme “With Humanity”. He had interacted with people from different sections of society and brought their concerns to the Prime Minister’s attention.

The discussion stressed the importance of inclusive development that benefits all communities. There was emphasis not only on economic growth but also on improving happiness indicators and human development. Proper distribution of resources based on population proportion and regional balance was also highlighted.

Issues related to Waqf matters and concerns around the Special Economic Freedom-related provisions were raised. The protection of historical mosques and Islamic heritage monuments was another important point of discussion.

Focus on Education and Minority Welfare

The revival of minority educational welfare schemes, including the Maulana Azad National Fellowship, was discussed. The development of the Malappuram centre of Aligarh Muslim University also came up during the meeting. The Grand Mufti underlined the need for closer cooperation between minority communities and the central government to ensure effective implementation of welfare programmes.

Prime Minister Modi appreciated the educational and social initiatives being carried out under the Grand Mufti’s leadership. He noted that such activities not only strengthen society but also enhance India’s image globally. The Prime Minister’s diplomatic efforts to promote international peace were also acknowledged during the meeting.

Prominent members including Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama secretary Perod Abdurrahman Sakafi and SYS president Dr Muhammad Abdul Hakeem Azhari were present as well.

The meeting reflected an effort to build dialogue and cooperation between religious leadership and the government, with a shared focus on development, harmony and national progress.
