The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has filed a notice seeking the termination of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s membership in Parliament. However, no privilege motion will be initiated against him. This development follows Gandhi’s recent speech in which he criticised the India–US trade agreement and the Union Budget.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Thursday said he has moved a motion in the Lok Sabha against Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of misleading the nation.
Dubey has sought the termination of Gandhi’s parliamentary membership and a lifetime ban on the Congress leader from contesting elections.
“I have moved a motion in Lok Sabha today against Rahul Gandhi on how he is misleading the nation with the help of forces like (George) Soros, who want to harm the nation. In the motion I have moved, I have requested that Rahul Gandhi’s membership should be terminated and he should be barred for life from contesting elections,” Dubey said.
This follows Gandhi’s Lok Sabha speech yesterday, in which he alleged that the Central government was compromising the nation’s interests.
In his address on Wednesday, Gandhi spoke on issues including geopolitical tensions, artificial intelligence, and the India–US trade deal. His remarks came amid ongoing protests by Opposition members, who alleged that he was initially prevented from speaking after referencing former Army Chief General M M Naravane’s unpublished memoir.
Opposition MPs have announced that they will continue their protest on Thursday at Makar Dwar, opposing what they describe as “anti-people clauses” in the trade agreement and expressing solidarity with protesting farmers.
Criticising the Centre over the India-US interim trade agreement, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the government of compromising national interests, asking whether it was “not ashamed of selling India” and alleging that it had effectively “sold Bharat Mata.”
While speaking in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi said that the government itself has admitted that the world is witnessing turbulence, with decline of a unipolar world, rising geopolitical conflicts, and the weaponisation of energy and finance. Despite this recognition, he alleged that the government has allowed the United States to leverage energy and financial systems in ways that negatively impact India.
“You yourself admit that we are facing a global storm, that the era of one superpower is over, that geopolitical conflicts are intensifying, and that energy and finance are being weaponised. Yet, despite acknowledging this reality, you have allowed the United States to weaponise energy and financial systems in ways that impact us. When America says we cannot buy oil from a particular country, it effectively means our energy security is being dictated externally — that energy itself is being weaponised against us. Are you not ashamed of this? I am saying you have compromised India’s interests. Have you no shame in what you are doing? It is as though you have sold ‘Bharat Mata’,” said Rahul Gandhi.
The Budget Session commenced on January28 and is scheduled to span 30 sittings over 65 days, concluding on April 2.
