North Korea Tests Hypersonic Missiles Citing Geopolitical Crisis, Response To US Venezuela Strikes?

Amid US-Venezuela tensions, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test firing of hypersonic missiles on Sunday, marking the country’s first ballistic missile test of the year, according to state media outlet KCNA. Kim said the launch was aimed at strengthening Pyongyang’s nuclear deterrence.

KCNA quoted Kim Jong Un as saying that maintaining and expanding a “strong and reliable nuclear deterrent” is a key strategic priority for North Korea. He referred to “recent geopolitical crises and various international circumstances,” though he did not specify which events he was pointing to.

According to reports, the development may be linked to recent U.S. military strikes on Venezuela, which North Korea has publicly criticised.

Missiles Hit Targets 1,000 km Away

According to KCNA, the hypersonic missiles struck targets around 1,000 kilometres away in waters east of North Korea. The test was conducted over the sea and aimed at evaluating the readiness and operational capability of the country’s hypersonic weapon systems.

South Korea’s military confirmed that North Korea fired ballistic missiles towards the sea on Sunday. The launch took place as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung began a state visit to China, North Korea’s main ally.

Link to U.S. Venezuela Strikes

Following the missile test, North Korea released a statement condemning U.S. strikes on Venezuela, calling them a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

North Korean expert Hong Min from the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul said the missile test appeared to be a response to those U.S. actions. He pointed to Kim’s reference to a “recent geopolitical crisis” as a possible signal.

Hwasong-11 Missiles Likely Used

Hong Min said the missiles tested were likely Hwasong-11 hypersonic missiles, based on images released by North Korean state media. These missiles were first publicly displayed during a military parade in October 2025.

KCNA said the drill was meant to test combat readiness, improve missile troops’ operational skills, and assess the country’s overall war deterrent.
