Bad news for Pakistan and China! After S-400, Russia offers India another advanced air defence system, its name is…

Russia has once again offered India its medium-range air defence system S-350 Vityaz, this time with Technology Transfer (ToT), which would allow parts of the system to be manufactured in India. According to Russian state-owned defence company Rostec, the S-350 is designed to support India’s existing S-400 Triumf batteries and further strengthen the country’s integrated air defence network.

During recent high-level discussions, talks also included the possibility of additional S-400 regiments and even the next-generation S-500 system. However, Russia is currently pushing the S-350 as a more immediately available and practical option. India has already operationalised three S-400 squadrons, with two more expected to be delivered. The S-350 is seen as ideal for middle and inner-layer air defence, complementing the long-range capabilities of the S-400.

Key features of the S-350 Vityaz system

The S-350 Vityaz (export version S-350E) is Russia’s modern medium-range surface-to-air missile system developed by Almaz-Antey. It has been designed to replace the older S-300PS system.

Key specifications include:

  • Range: Up to 120 km against aerodynamic targets such as fighter aircraft, and 25-30 km against ballistic missiles.
  • Altitude: Capable of intercepting targets at 20–30 km.
  • Missiles: Primarily uses 9M96E and 9M96E2 active radar-guided missiles, along with short-range 9M100 missiles. Each launcher can carry 12 missiles.
  • Target capacity: Can simultaneously track and engage 16 aerial targets (aircraft or helicopters) or 12 ballistic targets.
  • Radar: Equipped with a multifunctional AESA radar, capable of detecting low-altitude threats.
  • Other features: Highly mobile, quick to deploy and capable of intercepting cruise missiles, drones, precision-guided munitions and stealth targets.

The S-350 forms a layered defence with the S-400, where the S-400 handles long-range threats and the S-350 covers medium and shorter ranges. It is part of Russia’s layered air defence doctrine and has proven effective in conflicts such as Ukraine.

How the S-350 can protect India from China and Pakistan

India faces a two-front threat, Pakistan to the west and China to the north and east, both of which possess modern fighter jets, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and drones.

Against Pakistan:

Pakistan operates fighter jets like the JF-17 and J-10, along with Babur cruise missiles, many of which fly at low altitudes. The S-350 is well-suited to intercept such threats. During Operation Sindoor, India’s S-400 systems reportedly neutralised Pakistani attacks. The S-350 would add denser coverage, especially along the Punjab and Rajasthan borders.

Against China:

China fields advanced platforms such as the J-20 stealth fighter, DF-17 hypersonic missiles and large drone fleets. In high-altitude regions like Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, short and medium-range threats are more prominent. The S-350’s multi-target engagement capability and fast reaction time would help India build a strong defensive shield along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Working alongside the S-400, it would also improve India’s ability to deal with hypersonic and ballistic threats.

Strengthening India’s layered air defence

Overall, the S-350 would complete India’s multi-layered air defence system, which already includes Akash, Barak-8 and S-400 platforms. The system would not only help neutralise enemy air attacks but also give the Indian Air Force greater operational freedom, allowing it to focus more on offensive missions.

If the deal goes through, production and maintenance in India would significantly boost indigenous defence manufacturing, aligning with the country’s long-term self-reliance goals in the defence sector.
