SHOCKING! Pakistan government warns to ban social media platforms due to…

international media news
December 15, 2025 41 Views0

The Pakistan government has issued a warning to internet media platforms, stating that they may face restrictions if they do not cooperate with authorities. Barrister Aqil Malik, Minister of State for Law and Justice, emphasized the need for compliance amid ongoing investigations related to online content.

Social Media Restrictions in Pakistan

Social media platforms are widely used in Pakistan, with approximately 4.5 million users on platforms like X (formerly Twitter). The platform X was blocked in February 2024, roughly 10 days after the country’s general elections. This action highlighted the government’s increasing scrutiny of digital media channels.

Government’s Warning to Platforms

Responding to questions about a potential ban on the X account of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently in jail, Malik said, ‘The investigation is ongoing.’ He added that the government has reached out to X but noted that the platform has shown minimal cooperation compared to other internet networks.

The minister criticized X for applying double standards in content moderation. He pointed out that posts related to Palestine are removed within 24 hours, and accounts are blocked swiftly, whereas content related to terrorism in Pakistan has not been handled with similar urgency.

Potential Consequences for Non-Cooperation

Malik stated that internet media platforms have been issued reminders and warned that those failing to coordinate with authorities may face bans similar to measures taken in Brazil. He emphasized the importance of collaboration to ensure national security and effective regulation of online content.

Ongoing Monitoring and Future Steps

The Pakistan government continues to monitor social media platforms closely. Officials have made it clear that platforms must cooperate promptly with law enforcement and government investigations. Non-compliance may result in stricter regulatory measures, including temporary or permanent restrictions.

This development comes amid a growing focus by Pakistan’s authorities on controlling digital content and ensuring that social media platforms adhere to local regulations. The government’s warnings underline its intent to maintain oversight and hold platforms accountable for compliance with national laws.
