Gopichand P. Hinduja, the chairman of the Hinduja Group, passed away on Tuesday (November 4, 2025) in a London Hospital. The 85-year-old Indian-origin biz tycoon is the second among the four Hinduja brothers. The eldest brother, Srichand Hinduja, breathed his last in 2023. Gopichand’s other two brothers are Prakash Hinduja and Ashok Hinduja.

Who was Gopichand P Hinduja?

Gopichand P. Hinduja, popularly known as ‘GP’ among business circles, is the Chairman of the Hinduja Group and Hinduja Automotive Ltd, UK. He joined the family business in Mumbai in 1959 and was one of the chief architects behind the transformation of the Group. He is credited with steering the group from an Indo-Middle East trading operation into a multi-billion-dollar transnational conglomerate.

He completed his graduation from Bombay’s Jai Hind College in 1959. Additionally, he held an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Westminster and an Honorary Doctorate of Economics from Richmond College, London.

A pivotal business decision came when the Hinduja Group acquired Gulf Oil in 1984, followed shortly by the acquisition of Ashok Leyland in 1987, which marked one of the first major NRI investments in India back then. Today, it is among the most successful turnaround stories ever in Indian corporate history. Gopichand P Hinduja is also the visionary behind the Group’s forays into the power and infrastructure sectors.

The news of his death has passed shockwaves across the business fraternity. Jindal Steel Chairman, Naveen Jindal, expressed grief over the sudden news of his death. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Gopichand Hinduja Ji, a visionary industrialist, global leader, and proud son of India. Through his remarkable leadership, the Hinduja Group became a symbol of Indian enterprise and global excellence. His legacy of integrity, innovation, and service will continue to inspire generations. My heartfelt condolences to the Hinduja family. Om Shanti,” he wrote in a post on X.
