Indian cricket maestro Virat Kohli has etched his name further into the annals of cricket history by surpassing Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Kohli achieved this remarkable feat during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25, 2025.

Milestone Achievement

In the third ODI, Kohli crossed the 54-run mark, bringing his total to 14,235 runs from 305 matches, surpassing Sangakkara’s tally of 14,234 runs from 380 innings. This achievement places Kohli only behind India’s Sachin Tendulkar, who leads the list with 18,426 runs in 463 matches. Kohli’s remarkable consistency and ability to perform under pressure have been key factors in his ascent to this position.

Match Summary

Australia, opting to bat first, posted a total of 236 runs, losing all their wickets in 46.4 overs. Matt Renshaw was the top scorer for Australia, contributing a valuable half-century. The Indian bowlers maintained consistent pressure throughout the innings, with Harshit Rana leading the attack with impressive figures of 4/39.

Rohit Sharma played a stellar innings, scoring his 33rd ODI century. He remained unbeaten at 121 off 125 balls, including 13 fours and 3 sixes. His performance was a testament to his experience and composure under pressure. Virat Kohli contributed significantly with the bat, scoring 74 runs off 81 balls.

India secured a commanding 9-wicket victory over Australia in the third and final ODI of the series at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Chasing a target of 237 runs set by Australia, India achieved the target in 38.3 overs, finishing at 237/1. The partnership between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli was instrumental in this dominant chase.
