The much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is set to be inaugurated on October 8, 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The airport is set to place Mumbai among the world’s elite twin-airport cities, alongside London, New York, and Tokyo, giving a major boost to India’s global aviation stature. With inauguration just days away, here’s a first look at the stunning Navi Mumbai Airport.

The NMIA is being developed under a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings (74%) and CIDCO (26%). The contract to develop this airport was awarded to Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL) on October 25, 2017. What makes the airport interesting is its architecture which features a lotus-inspired design blending Indian heritage with state-of-the-art sustainable engineering, making it one of Asia’s most advanced airports.

The airport will significantly enhance Mumbai’s connectivity and will be implemented in 5 Phases. The project had begun in 2018. In the First and the Second Phase that is set to begin together, one runway, one terminal and a passenger capacity of two crore will be created. The second runway, four terminals along with an increased passenger capacity of nine crore will be created in Phase 3, 4 and 5.

Phase 1 will handle 20 million passengers annually with one runway and terminal. Additionally, the airport will become a major cargo hub, scaling from 0.5 million to 3.2 million tonnes annually, supported by a fully automated, AI-enabled terminal.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport will be the first airport in the country with automated passenger movement within its 1600 hectares for ten kms on city side and on airside.

Former Union Civil Aviation Minster Jyotiraditya Scindia had called this a project of pride for the entire nation. “The Navi Mumbai international Airport is not just an infrastructure project for Mumbai or Maharashtra, it is a project of pride for the entire nation,” he said.
